Lucky beginners: Dance holidays in Umbria – an article on how to do the first steps in Argentine Tango during a holiday workshop – Travel-quest Specialist Holidays
Though only in their early twenties, the Argentine brothers Enrique and Guillermo di Fazio have already become a legendary dance couple: “Los Hermanos Macana”. They are famous worldwide for their breathtaking and witty tango interpretations. With their full length “Two men shows” they thrill their audiences at Tango-, Dance- and Theatre festivals from America to Europe and Australia.
They couldn´t have chosen a more striking stage name: The term “macana “ comes from the Lunfardo, the language of the harbour quarters of Buenos Aires and means “a witty guy”, but also “one who’s just got it”. And that´s exactly what they are: playful and comical but with an incredible technical brilliance.
A unique couple bursting of ideas and energy, not only because there are two men doing the tango together. Yet “Los Macanas” are everything else but a “modern couple”. Deliberately they call themselves traditional tango dancers. Thus they take up an important part of tango history, when at the beginning of the last century men danced with each other. A consequence of the lack of ladies in the immigration country Argentina.
In the classes they teach with a lot of fun and empathy and of course with technical perfection. A pure joy for their students.

Two hearts beat in Wolfgang’s breast, and it is difficult to say, whether his bigger passion is sculpture or tango. In any case he is an excellent teacher, who imparts to his students with patience, artistic creativity and a lot of humour the joy for those things, that fill him with enthusiasm. Wolfgang has been dancing tango since 1994. Among his teachers are Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, Fabian Salas and Carolina del Rivero, Mariano“Chicho“ Frumboli and Eugenia Parilla, Kely and Facundo Posadas, Amira Campora, Metin Yazir, Graciela Gonzalez, Nestor Ray, Gloria and Eduardo Arquimbau, Yvonne Meissner and Eduardo Aquirre, Ruben Terbalca and many others. For him it is important not to teach figures and steps, but to impart to his students the ability to recognize the structure of the dance and its different elements, thus giving them the ability to invent playfully their own, always new “figures”. Consequence of this is a concept for a ”dialogue of the dancers “, where there are (almost) no “wrong steps”. This is certainly an excellent presupposition to have lots of joy with Argentine tango even as a beginner.

Steve and Debbie Morrall are delighted to return to La Rogaia for the third year running to teach Argentine tango. This year's course is suitable for dancers who have acquired basic Argentine tango technique and are ready to explore methods of improving connection and musicality in the three musical genres of this beautiful dance: tango, vals and milonga.
Steve is a life-long musician who teaches tango as a way of feeling and understanding the music. He uses his in-depth knowledge as a musican and tango dancer to teach in a fun and engaging way to help dancers interact creatively with the music. Partnered by his wife, Debbie, the couple do not teach choreography as it generates repetition and blocks appreciation of the music. They liberate their students by teaching the ethos of dancing "only the next step".
La Rogaia is 90 minutes drive north from Rome airport and, subject to co-ordinating flight times, it may be possible for you to share a minibus or car hire with us for a hassle-free journey and sightseeing trips.

Andrea started her career as a classical ballet dancer and later on as figure skater. On the ice she met Christian dancing a "Tango romantico" together. They fell in love with the Argentine Tango and took classes in Buenos Aires with Ricardo & Nicole, „Los Dinzel“, Osvaldo Zotto and Mora Godoy. They are running a Tango School in Vienna, Austria, and perform often in shows. In their classes they emphasize a correct technique and posture. Their teaching is characterized by clear role concepts for the leader and the follower: Each of the two partners will learn to experience a maximum of freedom within the limits of his/her role. Students will grasp the basics of the dance quickly and enjoy the playful part of the dance.

Sebastián and Andrea are two representatives of the new generation of Argentine tango dancers, choreographers and pedagogues. They express with passion, tradition and innovation an elegant and precise style of dance, characterised by great virtuosity. Therefore they are acclaimed as true tango dancers both by the general public and by the “milongueros”, and are mostly appreciated for the emotion they have been expressing in their dance throughout the world for the past decade.
Andrea starts at the age of 8 to study Argentine folklore dances and ballet. In 1993 she graduates from the National Dance Institute "Maria Ruanova" (Argentina) as a professor of Argentina Folklore dances. It is at this time that her passion for the tango takes her to the most traditional "milongas" of Buenos Aires where she meets and learns from celebrated salon dancers like : Alberto Villarrazo, Leonardo Lerman, Ernesto Castello, Pedro Faraldo and others. In 1994 she meets Sebastian Misse with whom she establishes a tango partnership. Together they represent the culture of the tango all over the world.
Also Sebastián starts his studies of Argentine folklore dances at the age of 8. In 1988 he takes his first tango steps. His attraction for the tango takes him to the most famous tango salons of Buenos Aires together with his sibblings Andrea, Stella and Gabriel. In 1990 he starts training with his most influential teachers Miguel Angel Zotto, Osvaldo Zotto and Antonio Todaro. In 1994 he meets Andrea Reyero and they become a profesional tango couple.

Joseba & Bakartxo come from San Sebastián (Basque country) where they have started a wave of Tango enthusiasm. They have been also teaching in Spain, France and Germany. Joseba and Bakartxo are focussing on the flow of energy within the couple, in close and in open embrace. They dance with every fibre of their body. Based on their training with Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, Chicho Frumboli and Pablo Villarraza and Dana Frigoli they have created a style of their own: their Tango Nuevo is soft, lascivious and dynamic. And they love traditional music. How well this goes together they showed in „De Recuerdos y Tango" (their show "Of Memories and Tango"). They are inspired by the refined subtlety and joyous swing of old Tango music. In their classes they work very intensely with each individual participant and know how to explain even complex sequences of movements.

Laura originally from Brescia, Italy, has been living in Berlin for 25 years. She has started with Argentine Tango 13 years ago with Brigitte Winkler. She has partnered for several years "El Pajaro" Diego Riemer and organized a Milonga together with him. During her regular stays at Buenos Aires she was trained by Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, Marianna Flores and Eduardo Capussi, Fernando Galera and Vilma Vega, Analia Vega and Marcelo Varela and Chicho and Lucia.
Andreas got into Argentine Tango 13 years ago. He has taught for several years in Bremen (Northern Germany) together with Thomas and Catalina and was mainly influenced by Fernando and Vilma, Nancy and Damian and Analia and Marcelo.
Laura and Andreas originally preferred the Milonguero-Style in close embrace. In the past years however they started to adopt elements of Tango Nuevo and to experiment with the open embrace. It is their aim to interpret the unique character of Tango music also in the “Nuevo Estilo”. In their lessons they emphasize on musicality, communication within the couple, playful movements. For preparation they also integrate body exercises with elements from Yoga and Feldenkrais.

Tireless researcher and maestro, remarkable dancer and connoisseur of the secrets of tango - Fabián Salas has brought light to old beliefs and opened new ways in the conception of the dance, creating an unmistakable style of dancing the Tango. Since the early nineties he has performed in the most important Tango shows and has taught all around the world. In 1997 he starred as one of the three principal dancers in the award-winning movie "The Tango Lesson" by Sally Potter. Carolina started dancing at the age of 6, and throughout her career she has practiced different dancing techniques, among them classical ballet and contemporary dance. She discovered the tango in 1995, and since the year 2000 Carolina dances with Fabián Salas. Applying all her artistic knowledge from other dances, she brings to tango style and elegance, as well as a profound understanding of the technique and dynamics of the dance, and also of the woman’s role in it.
